Eccles’ drainage solutions chosen for M6 motorway upgrades
The M6 at junction 10 often experiences a large volume of congestion and traffic delays, particularly during morning and evening peak times.
Road capacity problems have been identified as one of the main transport issues here, and so work is underway to replace its two existing bridges with two new wider four lane bridges to increase capacity and improve traffic flow.
A key component of this of course, is the provision of an effective new drainage system; one that can handle heavy weight loads from a variety of traffic types whilst safely removing surface and sub-surface water from the carriageways.

The chosen contractor, who had worked with Eccles previously, knew where to go for the most honest advice, and approached our consultation team to help source the best specification for the project.
Our DU220, DU019 and DU001 products (part of the Eccles Group 4 D400 range) were recommended as the most suitable because they meet the clear opening requirement as well as being able to withstand up to 400kN (40 ton) loads of constant heavy vehicular traffic.
For even more heavy duty usage, our DU111 product (part of the Eccles Group 5 E600 range was also chosen because it can handle 600KN (60 ton) loads, which is required in the storage compound.
This selection of high quality manhole covers and gratings are made from ductile iron, which is incredibly strong and durable – ideal for heavy usage on jobs like these.
Featuring our SmartGrip TechnologyTM, three point suspension for added stability, large type keyways for easy maintenance, and Kitemarked EN124:2:015 for safety and quality standardisation, these units are both smart and functional.
