Eccles’ drainage solution chosen for new £400m learning logistics centre
The creation of a new 40 acre science campus, located on Coldharbour Road, Harlow, will bring together a critical mass of scientists and knowledge that will strengthen scientific research and the ability to improve and protect public health.
Costing £400m, the project will oversee new building works as well as refurbishment of existing laboratories and office areas, construction of a new arrivals area, a new logistics centre and development of site-wide infrastructure including car parking.
The new state-of-the-art arena will facilitate scientific advancements in public health, which of course is of particular significance presently as we face the global COVID-19 outbreak.
It also represents a huge boost for local employment, expected to provide work for up to 3,000 people by 2024, with scope for further expansion.

Richard Gleave, Public Health England Deputy Chief Executive, said*: “This is yet another milestone for PHE and we can now look forward to the chosen contractors coming on board and bringing their considerable wealth of experience and skills to our programme to create a world-leading national and international resource.” *Essex Live News
Alongside all this new infrastructure, one of the key considerations for the site was to ensure that the drainage system in place also functions optimally.
DU120 ductile iron indexed hinged access covers, part of the Eccles D400 Group 4 MaxiGripTM range of manhole covers, were chosen to service the project.
Manufactured from strong ductile iron, these covers are capable of withstanding large loads up to 40 tonnes, which is important in busy areas where there will be high volumes of cars, vans and lorries.
As well as being strong and durable, the D400s also feature our unique SmartGrip TechnologyTM anti-slip tread pattern as standard, designed to provide a high PSRV skid resistance value >70, as well as a three point suspension for non-rock stability.
Aesthetics are important for a project like this too: a new, modern, slick campus needs modern, slick drainage too. The MaxiGripTM range is a great choice as the units are neat, stylish and well-designed, as well as being functionally superior.
In addition, the products have Kitemark certification (BSI EN124-2:2015) for proven safety and quality standardisation.
